This brought a smile to my face - I saw Randy Newman probably 10-15 years ago - solo show, small intimate type theater. And you are absolutely correct - one of the most laid back performers I've ever seen. Absolutely hilarious and delightful and thoroughly professional, but he definitely doesn't expend any unnecessary energy. Of course, I'm a big fan, so whatever he chose to do was fine with me.
