jason, yes, you are so right its just becoming one HUGANTIC corporation &
the stakes are so high for the a&r people re: either loosing a job or maybe
becoming a vice president or something & it has turned the whole biz into
some kind of feeding frenzy as to what will SELL (sex, violence).
NO offense to those in the accounting business but it is the accounting biz
that is in charge of creative decisions, from what i understand & how crazy
is that?
yes, the lowest common denominator gives new meaning to the bottom
line...though I am obviously very cynical about the music industry i AM very
very encouraged by the kids that I know--they are smart & sensitive & many
have been exposed to great music, in spite of what is popular.

Great post, Kate..and very true.
It's also worth noting - and bearing in mind - that the Music Industry
has become more closely linked with Major Multimedia Corporations (Time,
Sega, Universal) in recent years and as such the emphasis throughout the
Biz is even more geared to lowest-common-dominators and the financial
viablity of the operations than it ever was.
Job security amongst record execs is not what it used to be. They have
to deliver the right kind of success, and in the timespan dictated by
the money-men. As a result, they can't be expected to have quite the
same approach to the whole process anymore.
Jason.
