The first person who springs to my mind (who I know
you love too, Kakki) is Jimmy Webb. When I first saw
him live, I arrived a little late and came in as he was in
the middle of a piano solo - my first thought was 'Joni'
- the colour of his chords had that same wistfulness -
I was totally spellbound, unable to move - until the end,
when I realized that my mouth had been wide open
throughout.
I may be way off, but I have a feeling they would have
a ball working together, too. Knowing how much I love
his album '10 Easy Pieces', a friend recently sent me
a copy of his 'Archive 1970 to 1977' album - great to
hear Joni harmonising joyously on the chorus of 'Walk
Your Feet in the Sunshine' (with, I imagine, Susan Webb,
although it doesn't mention either in the credits).
Looks like he wrote this in London. In the liner notes, he says,
"Sitting in my little Mews House at Three Kings Yard listening
to Joni play her songs from "Court & Spark". Eating walnut
cheese from Harrod's. Recording at Trident, spending money,
hurting bad."
PaulC (fantasizing what it would be like to see Joni and Jimmy
on back to back grand pianos in a small room - anyone know
the whereabouts of Aladdin's lamp?)
np Jimmy Webb - P.F. Sloan (perfect for a sunny Friday morning
in old London Town - "the last time I saw P.F. Sloan - he was
summer-burned, he was winter blown" (who was P.F. Sloan,
I wonder?)
