a love affair he DIDN'T have, the way i heard it... a bunch of jmdlers went
and saw jimmy webb in boston a couple of years back and he told a story
about that song. seems he was entranced with an english lass and tried his
usual technique: "get the girl on the bench" meaning write a song for her,
set her down on the piano bench and play it and she'll be putty in your
hands. so he wrote the song, sat next to her and played it and she said
(webb imitating posh accent) "oh but that's silly..." d'oh, dissed.

so he gets on a plane to new york, broken hearted, sees the headline "simon
and garfunkle split" and says to himself, "art's going to need material".
the rest is history...
