It varies, some boards do it even under xp, some boards that did it with xp
don't do it with win7 and viseversa. There are a few variables we need to
work out and possibly eliminate to solve this issue. The crackling/static
sound is obvious.
I've heard good things from folks that I've spoken to who use the saffire
units, what problems have you had with them or heard of?

Is this a pronounced crackling, or something hiding in the noise floor?

And is it with w7 or certain motherboards?

Had pretty good luck with mine,
it's not for no reason they'd held their place for 12 years, but yes, we
need some new interfaces with accessible control pannels.

The profire 26 26\
is kind of a bust, I think most everyone is having more issues with
w7 drivers, naturally, it's first gen stuff.

I wanted it for protools access, but may be exchanging for a saphire, or
maybe an rme model, don't know yet.

Still working to resolve accessibility and functionallity issues.

But with a couple of 10 10 cards,
it's smooth sailing.
