Hmmm.... The future of ASP is NOT in question from what I see. Microsoft
has leveraged a lot of technology and services to help extend its
functionality. They have it built in to IIS. They have too many large
customers using ASP on their web site (Lycos, Motley Fool, OnSale, etc... --
including their own mammoth web site) to just completely abandon it. Unless
they want severe backlash from all their customers..
ASP is highly popular for ISPs to support for customers who want to put
up a web site (maybe not as popular as support FrontPage extensions, but
close). ASP is also getting ported to UNIX and they are trying to extend
its reach there too (i.e. ChiliSoft, et. al.).
Anyway, it goes into their model where people use higher level languages
more and just plug in components rather than writing the "down-and-dirty" C
or C++ code. Looking at how they enabled interfaces for ActiveX, its pretty
easy to figure out which language they made easier to program in -- VB (or
Java) rather than C++. Just look at a couple of their examples on writing
code for ASP ActiveX controls to see what I mean.
Yes, there is some concern about ASP and Java integration for the
future. MS has NOT shown where they plan to go with it. However, I don't
think MS will completely abandon it. I don't think Sun would like them to
do so either, since it'll hurt Java. If MS doesn't include a JVM in I.E.,
the odds of people downloading one for their browser is slim -- people are
less compelled to download one (http://www.useit.com/alertbox/980322.html)
for a certain page/site for functionality. I'm not sure exactly what MS and
Sun will do. I'm fairly sure something reasonable will be worked out.
Providing, of course, htat they are both reasonable.

If I can put my 2c in on this, You should also be worried about the future
of MS and ASP. They look like support for Java will be dropped, They are
re-organizing
lines of business not to mention that they seem to be making XML a big part
of their new Web Paradigm. This makes you wonder about the future of ASP or
it should.
