I'm pretty sure that you'll need to work with another vendor to provide
credit card authorization, verification and online charging. I doubt you'd
really want to reinvent all of that code, plus you'd have to create
relationships with all of the credit authorization centers.
To accept credit cards, you will need a merchant account, which is where the
money is deposited for credit transactions. You will want to lookup the
various credit card places for details. There are many sites that will
provide the service to you, which is pretty common unless you are a bigger
company, which I can tell you are not by the questions. Cybercash provides
a real-time charging system. Some other companies provide interfaces to
their systems. It also depends on whether you need the web site to do all
of the authorization/charges automatically, or whether someone will manually
enter the information based on the orders placed.
For example, a web site for a retail store may just want you to accept the
credit card info, and they will use their existing mechanisms to charge when
they fulfill the order. It's very important to ensure that you handle
charges correctly so that you only charge for what you have fulfilled.
