"newsgroup?"
IMHO: I like the forum in this format.
Here are two choices for those bothered by the number of messages:
1. http://www.jsp-interest.com/ links you to the archive; and
2. if you go to #1, you will find option two, captioned:
----- Email INBOX chrisis -----

which will take you to http://www.jsp-interest.com/subscribe.html#mail,
giving you the option to read digests and archives and to not receive email.
