Can anyone recommend a simple, low cost DB that does a better job

Sure, Lucene :) http://lucene.apache.org

It's now SQL92-compliant, but it can definitely serve the purpose of a lightweight "database".

 While
MySQL does work for many cases, I find it somewhat limiting for what I
need to do. http://www.searchtools.com/info/database-search.html has
some suggestions but I was wondering if anyone had any real experience
with this.

Thanks, Mike
