Dear Developer and User of OpenJUMP, yesterday evening we (7 people) had an IRC talk on the future of OpenJUMP and JPP. The reason has been that Erwan Bocher is involved in a larger 3 year project on building a SDI (Spatial Data Infrastructure) probably based on OpenJUMP. He and his team offer us to participate on the developments they want to do. The project will cover 2 subproject concerning the improvement but also a refactoring of the current OpenJUMP code. a) Implementing an abstract database layer based on H2 database (http://www.h2database.com/). This will solve some memory problems and give an abstract interface (e.g. shp or gml driver independent) for plugin development. b) They plan to implement map algebra functionality for raster data (images). The raster functionalities will be based on ImageJ (http://www.cooa.unh.edu/tutorial.jsp) and deegree libraries (http://deegree.sourceforge.net/) Out of the discussion yesterday and today in a personal talk with Erwan we realized that the project (from Erwan), but also other people like me, have (1) other needs for functionality than Desktop GIS end-users. (2) Furthermore, in response to the FOSSGIS in Berlin, we see a need for a legal entity for organizing workshops and receiving money for particular developments. *) The proposal we have now, is that JPP would focus on end-user developments. The OpenJUMP enduser version will still be hosted on Sourceforge (probably under the JPP umbrella). Further we will establish a second OpenJUMP Reserach Version (which will obtain later a different name), on that Erwans team can work on and will be a GIS platform for research. Here it is not yet clear where this project will be hosted (several proposal have been made: Intevation, SourceForge or IRSTV institute (http://www.irstv.cnrs.fr/) .. thereby I do prefer a sourceforge account). It is intended that for endusers useful functionality will be merged into the original OpenJUMP (which needs of course people to do that). *) With respect to the legal entity: Erwan offered to give SIGLE, which is already one, a sligthly different objective than currently. This means SIGLE should renamend (eventually to OpenJUMP Research Consortium) and interantionalized (not only to the european scale) to be able to organize development and teaching on OpenJUMP and OpenJUMP-R. A personal final comment: We need to re-think who will drive JPP and what and who is JPP?
