Mary and all,

Our history does stretch back several thousand years but
it's recording was problematic. There was apparently a huge
native settlement in what is today Southeastern Oklahoma. Google
for Spiro Mounds and read the first article that shows. Briefly,
the Spiro People were native Americans that developed a high
culture there from AD 800 until around 1450. The Mounds are 8
miles outside the modern-day town of Spiro, Oklahoma and are
loaded with ancient artifacts showing that the Spiro people
traded all over North America, had elaborate religious
ceremonies and wrote in a hieroglyphic picture-based language.

A lot is still a mystery such as why did the society
decline around 1450. Nobody can blame that one on the Europeans
but something went wrong.

People continued to live in the area, but civilization
levels went way down.

In the past, the reason for declines like that is
related to climate and or agricultural collapse. Again, look up
the Spiro Mounds and the article will get you started.

It also says that this site is the only prehistoric
human settlement in Oklahoma but it is one of the most important
in North America. Thankfully, it is well-protected now so we can
hopefully learn more.

I an a friend in college who was from Spiro, but had no
idea how important this small town is. By the way, the I is long
so you say "spi ro" and you will be saying the way it is said,
here.
