Since you are running your own mail server you should be able to
check the logs to see if you can pin-point the sending issue. [I'm
assuming that when you say "but cannot send", that the messages stay
in the K-9 account's "outgoing" folder on the mobile device. If they
are getting off the mobile device, but not showing up at the
recipient, that's likely a whole different issue.]

Normally port 465 is ssl/tls, but in some implementations could be
starttls. Which do you have implemented? 

K-9's starttls is now "required", so anyone who had it set
previously as "if available" could be running into issues if the
target server doesn't really support starttls.

My environment is inbound: dovecot / ssl/tls / 993
                 outbound: sendmail / ssl/tls / 465

and I haven't encountered any problems.
