While I recognize the hard work the developers do and appreciate it, there 
really has been no recognition that there is a pretty major bug in the upgrade 
process. Rolling back isn't easy for a lot of people. I managed to move past it 
but what I did isn't working for everyone.

I suspect there are some real cert issues that were masked in previous versions.

The guy who said he manages his own server and hadn't changed anything in 
years, I can't help but think he's using something deprecated and no longer 
supported in k9. I don't recall seeing support for anything dropped but it's 
possible. Trying to support everything ever just isn't practical.
