K-9 doesn't open attachments directly (except maybe text ones), rather it calls available installed apps and has them do what they are designed for. E.g., if you have a pdf reader installed, you should get a "complete action using" popup showing your pdf reader(s) and letting you select. The same applies to spreadsheets, documents (m$word or elsewise), even things like powerpoint (or equiv.). I can't think of an e-mail attachment that I've gotten on my mobile devices that K-9 hasn't found an app to open it with.
