I've never run into this ... on any of my currently active devices,
covering 3 major android releases, or on any past device/K-9 version.

In K-9, what do you have set for "storage location" on an account
under:
    - settings
      - account settings
        - storage
            -- regular internal or external?

In Adobe Reader, under settings, what do you have set for
"Acrobat.com Cache Location" -- internal or SD card?

It appears that you can set either of these to external, whether an
external location is available or not. 

Mine are all set to "internal".
