Indeed the problem was that my attempt to set up K-9 happened to coincide with a massive nationwide email outage by Comcast. That's resolved now, and K-9 is checking and receiving Comcast mail. Sorry for the misplaced anxiety.
However, it does seem to be the case that the Comcast incoming server is not imap.comcast.net, but *imap.email.comcast.net*. That change needs to be reflected in K-9's automated setup process, I believe. I'll have other questions as I'm getting used to using K-9, which I'll post here.
