You are incorrect about IMAP. It's not confusing at all. It's drop dead
simple. I regularly use 3 different devices to manage my IMAP email.

Based on this thread there is no way to instruct current versions of K-9 to
leave emails on the server when fetching emails using POP3.
I do not want to use IMAP (as Seth suggests) due to the confusion when
multiple email clients on multiple devices are used to view and manage my email.
I'm concluding that k-9 can't be safely used for my purposes.
I will kill the current installation process on my phone so as not to risk
data loss on my mail server.

Hi, not sure if this is by design or not. I just installed the latest
version of K9, onto an SGS2, and I'm finding that when K9 downloads an
email (ie. the body of the email) via POP, it deletes the email from the
inbox on the server.
I'd like it to leave the email in the inbox on the server, as I only
want them deleted when I download them in Thunderbird on my PC.
Is there a setting in K9 for "leave messages on server" when checking
POP accounts?
Many thanks!
