Open source licenses are not the same as public domain.  In order to
choose a license, the author has to keep the copyright.

the MIT license is a permissive one, very similar to BSD.  it allows
anybody (like you) to use the software for almost anything, including
its use in a commercial product.

of course, IANAL. for legal advice, get a legal professional.
