That's eventually what I had to do.  DRC then complained profusely about the 
vias under the pads.  I think that is because when I moved the chip back to the 
original position, I did not get it exact and the vias were no longer directly 
under the pads.

Hello Greg
You could try disabling DRC in PCBNEW so that it will  let you connect the 
tracks to the correct net, and then re-enabling DRC to check. I think the 
tracks will be assigned to the correcponding nets.
