That is basically what Ubuntu, UbuntuLite, and a swad of other Linux distros
are trying to achieve. However a lot of distros also tend to put a lot into
the distro (making them bloated) because they do not really have enough
inkling on what users need. Do take note that users _are_ picky, hard to
please, and have a lot of things on their mind when it comes to what they
want on their desktops and users have difficulty in identifying what they
_really_ need. So most distros put selected applications that will most
likely fill a niche or an itch that users would want.

Ubuntu and other single disc distros put only what they seem as the most
basic applications that a user would need however, adds support through the
repositories in case users want additional software that was not included in
their typical release.

And since you want the latest, that will also be very difficult since you
have to consider the different stages in putting up a linux distro. You have
also going to account the time required to produce the cd media and shipping
them. So the _latest_ distro that you can have is not necessarily the
_bleeding edge_ distro.

Take the case also of SuSE Linux. A lot of people consider it to be bloated.
Actually, it just comes with a lot of applications that it thinks a user
might need. However, during the installation phase, you can just _remove
packages that you think you cannot use and go on with the installation. But
no, others will just install it as is, and whine later when the system gets
too big.

Bare in mind that putting up a distro of your own is not an entirely point
and click process nor is it just an _assemble the blocks_ thing. A lot of
considerations are being put on the kernel, the driver support, the specific
niche that the distro will play on, and the applications and type of users
that will use it. That is why there are a lot of distros that plays well on
specific niches and purpose, not to mention the general distros that you can
find anywhere.

If you want to look at building a distro for yourself at less effort, try to
look at Installinux (http://www.instalinux.com/). Its about as close as you
can get in making your own distro, or bootable linux.

To those people that you think are basically _badmouthing_ linux, then I
think you have to show them Sabayon 1.0, Ubuntu 6.10, or SLED 10. Or better
yet, show them Engarde Security Linux, AsteriskNOW, or even Backtrack
2.0and then ask them if any of the Windows versions can be as hardened
as these
Linux distros. You can also just let them see Xgl and Beryl/Emerald at work,
and just look at their jaws drop.

hi all.

with tons of free, downloadable livecds out there with features i haven't
dreamt of using, programs, i, an ordinary windows user havent heard b4 or
find no use of, i'm thinking (yeah!) why not build a livecd pre-built with
the usual application including (only) the latest openoffice word, calc
and impress, firefox, ym from yahoo, xirc and chikka. must be networkable
and with samba for file sharingit should load the selected progam into
memory (vfs) to improve performance and unload if closed to
reclaim resources and most importantly, can automount/dismount cdrom and
floppy for easy to access or something like that. i dont think desktop theme
is an issue so long as the program icons are there for click and run so it
doesnt have to look like and feel like mswindows at all. i tried blackbox,
fluxbox & twm. they are good, reliable and very small. (gnome and kde are
terribly heavy). busybox for utilities. this should make
the distribution light on the system as well.

but of cors hardware is an issue so it should run from at least 64mb or
128mb minimum ram in a early pentium class and celeron machines.

this project (if well presented) will re-introduce linux to the entire
community with a bang even to those who spit in your face b4 you can even
say LIN--- pweeeh!!! pangita tug lain mailad.

this will hopefully increase the number of linux users and decrease our
dependence on microsoft. and i won't have to hide or close shop when
somebody shouts 'ang microsoft gapang raid!!'.

if possible, is this viable? pros? cons? group project? anyone? or maybe a
contest who can come up with one first for a wreath of leaves.
