did something similar a couple of months ago.

I wanted to make a livecd of my server so I would have to reinstallanything if
i decided to swap machines. On top of that, I wanted to beable to continue
using a hdd to store my cache, var, and other dynamiccontents, plus be able to
change the settings when I need, or installother software.

I was able to create a live cd of my centos server. unfortunately, with the
intermittent connection problems I am experiencing with mydsl, haven't had a
chance to test it out in a real environment. Itboots fine, can do all that I
want to do, but have not yet finalizedwhich apps I'd like to be permanently
installed.

I used linux-live scripts, did not really had any major problems withit except
during installing squashfs and unionfs. Mainly because I hada hard time
locating the sources for the kernel of centos4.4(final).and some dependencies,
minor problems. Nothing that can't be solvedusing google.

Anyway, creating the livcd was a breeze. Took time on my 486, but runsfine.

I used Qemu to test the ISO image before burning. Pretty good tool,Qemu, saved
me a bunch of CDs, much faster than using CD-RW.

You might want to look at linux-live at http://www.linux-live.org/, itsdocs and
example is for slax, but it works pretty much with any runninglinux distro.

All you'd need to do is prepare your kernel, (i recompiled mine) by
addsquashfs, and unionfs. Install all the progams you want. Clean up,and
remove perhaps some man and other help files that you don't use.Build your ISO,
burn, then you got yourself your own livecd witheverything you want on it.

Although for me, I did some tweaking to make it use and merge theread-only
images with HD so I could change the config when I neededto. (Its all in the
unionfs docs).

hth,
C. Blue

p.s. I would have written a more detailed steps for you but my memoryisn't that
good with all the booze from the holiday festivities.

p.s.s. you could also use bootscriptor and a mini dvd (1.4GB) andmulti-boot
different versions of your livecd (make them really lean andfast).

hi all.

with tons of free, downloadable livecds out there with features ihaven't dreamt
of using, programs, i, an ordinary windows user haventheard b4 or find no use
of, i'm thinking (yeah!) why not build a livecdpre-built with the usual
application including (only) the latestopenoffice word, calc and impress,
firefox, ym from yahoo, xirc and chikka. must be networkable and with samba for
file sharingitshould load the selected progam into memory (vfs) to
improveperformance and unload if closed to reclaim resources and
mostimportantly, can automount/dismount cdrom and floppy for easy to accessor
something like that. i dont think desktop theme is an issue so longas the
program icons are there for click and run so it doesnt have tolook like and
feel like mswindows at all. i tried blackbox, fluxbox& twm. they are good,
reliable and very small. (gnome and kde areterribly heavy). busybox for
utilities. this should makethe distribution light on the system as well.

but of cors hardware is an issue so it should run from at least64mb or 128mb
minimum ram in a early pentium class and celeronmachines.

this project (if well presented) will re-introduce linux to theentire community
with a bang even to those who spit in your face b4 youcan even say LIN---
pweeeh!!! pangita tug lain mailad.

this will hopefully increase the number of linux users anddecrease our
dependence on microsoft. and i won't have to hide or closeshop when somebody
shouts 'ang microsoft gapang raid!!'.

if possible, is this viable? pros? cons? group project? anyone? ormaybe a
contest who can come up with one first for a wreath of leaves.
