Chinese FM Meets Moroccan Special Envoy

Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan met Monday with
Abdelaziz Meziane Belskih, special envoy of the
Moroccan King Sidi Mohammed, and accepted a letter
from the king to President Jiang Zemin on the Middle
                       East crisis.

Belskih briefed Tang on the current Middle East
situation, and said that the Moroccan King, as
president of the Jerusalem Commission, is concerned
about the Middle East peace process.

Morocco holds that the Middle East situation is in a
critical state, he said, adding that Israel should
implement seriously the relevant resolutions and
withdraw its armies immediately from the Palestinian
                       autonomous region.

He noted that a more effective mechanism should be
established to push forward the peace process, adding
that Morocco has appreciated the efforts of China, a
permanent member of the UN Security Council, in
                       promoting the peace process.

Tang said that Israel's action of using force
recently has caused masses of civilian casualties and
property losses, and the Middle East process was
undermined. Chinese government expresses its concern
                       and unrest about the situation.

In a message to the Palestinian leaders and Israeli
leaders, President Jiang pointed out that violence
and conflicts only further the hatred, and dialogue
and negotiation can bring about hope and peace. China
has expressed the stance in the U.N. and the other
                       international occasions.

Tang said that China sympathizes with and supports
the just cause of the Palestinians, and holds that
the Palestinians have the right to build up their
independent country according to the relevant U.N.
resolutions, and China supports the Palestinians to
                       enjoy the national self-determination right,
including the right of building their own country.

He noted that China opposes any act of undermining
the UN resolutions, and holds that the international
community has the obligation to help the Palestinians
                       restore national interests.

Chinese Premier Meets Spanish Crown Prince

Premier Zhu Rongji met with Crown Prince
Felipe De Borbon Y Grecia of Spain at the
Great Hall of the People Monday.

Zhu extended a warm welcome to the Crown
Prince who is on his first visit to China
and spoke highly of bilateral ties.

Zhu said, in recent years, bilateral ties
have witnessed sound development, citing the fact
that high-level contacts have increased, economic and
                       trade cooperation expanded, cultural exchanges
enhanced, and the two countries have shared many
                       common points on world issues.

The Chinese government attaches great importance to
relations with Spain and believes that there is great
potential for developing friendly cooperation, said
                       the Premier.

China is willing to work together with Spain to push
forward ties in the new century, Zhu said.

Felipe expressed satisfaction over bilateral ties and
said Spain attaches importance to its relations with
China. He said China is a priority in Spain's recent
strategy of developing relations with Asia-Pacific
                       countries.

Khatami Urges Islamic States' Support for
                       Palestinians

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami on Monday urged
Islamic states to support the Palestinian people and
defend their rights during the upcoming summit of the
Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

"On the threshold of the OIC summit, I tell all my
colleagues in the Islamic and Arab world that the
oppressed Palestinians are placing hope on us to
defend their rights and at least echo their voice to
                       the world," Khatami said.

The 56-member OIC is scheduled to hold its ninth
summit in Doha, Qatar on November 12-14, during which
Iran is to hand over its rotating chairmanship to
                       Qatar.

Khatami also called on Qatar to sever trade ties with
Israel, the official Islamic Republic News Agency
                       reported.

Only Egypt, Jordan and Turkey in the Middle East have
official diplomatic relations with Israel. Some other
countries exchanged trade offices or interest
                       sections with the Jewish state.

Tunisia, Morocco and Oman severed their limited ties
with Israel following the outbreak of bloody clashes
between Israeli troops and Palestinians late
September, especially after an Arab summit in Cairo
last month to condemn Israeli "atrocities."

But Qatar has so far resisted calls to close an
Israeli trade office in Doha and its trade
                       representation in Tel Aviv.

There are reports that Khatami might boycott the OIC
summit due to Qatar's refusal to sever trade ties
                       with Israel.

More than one month of Israeli-Palestinian conflicts
have so far left some 180 people dead and thousands
wounded. Most of the victims were Palestinians.
