[In the past few days tensions between Iran and
Turkey-backed Azerbaijan in the Caspian have
escalated, threatening to lead to a military
confrontation. (Be prepared to hear about an Azeri
Liberation Army in northern Iran soon.)
As the following dispatch will make clear, Turkey is
also NATO's Trojan Horse in points farther east; a
common NATO policy to box in and exclude Russia, Iran
and Armenia from access to the Caspian and its oil
reserves.]

Turkey to Give Kazakhstan 10 Million Dollars in
Military Aid
ALMATY, Aug 3, 2001 -- (Agence France Presse) Turkey
intends to provide 10 million dollars in military aid
to Kazakhstan over the next decade, a Kazakh official
said on Friday.
The aid will include military technology and
communications equipment, Kazakh Deputy Defense
Minister Alibek Kasymov was cited by Interfax as
saying.
Turkey had already delivered to Kazakhstan two
military patrol boats, as well as typographical and
map making equipment within the framework of military
aid, the news agency reported.
Kasymov was speaking at the opening of a
representative office of the Turkish armed forces
general staff in the Kazakh capital Astana.
Kazakhstan, a former Soviet state, has been gradually
revamping its military forces to meet the increasing
threat posed by terrorism and extremism in the Central
Asian region.
Turkey, for its part, has attempted to forge closer
ties with Turkic-speaking Central Asian republics
since they gained independence following the Soviet
Union's collapse a decade ago. ((c) 2001 Agence France
