Peruvians Oppose Revenge for Attacks against US

Lima, Sept 18 (PL) Two outstanding Peruvian psychoanalysts and
political commentators spoke against Talion"s Law, the revenge
paradigm, Tuesday, as a US response to the Sept 11 attacks on
this northern country.

Max Hernandez and Cesar Rodriguez Rabanal talked about the
incredible lack of US protection, when they analyzed the
bloody attacks and their significance.

They considered the US demand for justice by weapons
understandable, but warned that the problem of international
terrorism will not be solved by "an eye for an eye," which
will only whet the use of violence.

"If a violent response is made, if a democratic way out of the
situation is not sought, terrorists will be the winners",
pointed out Rodriguez Rabanal, Peruvian presidential advisor
to Alejandro Toledo. The Peruvian President supported a US
military response to the attacks.

Hernandez saw as positive, the attitude of many New Yorkers,
who advocate peace and justice, in a vigorous rejection of
violence.

Both commentators agreed that those barbarous attacks should
motivate reflections on the globalization phenomenon.

"Today the West should think about the great disparities in
the development of peoples, and these disparities facilitate
the insidious task of evil apostles and promoters of hatred.
These people seek and find the pretext to make war in these
conditions", Rodriguez Rabanal stated.

"Let"s not forget that globalization has reached the whole
planet, but some are victims and others are tyrants. We should
think about this now, so as not to have regrets in the future,
and not think of military solutions -or the use of force-",
Hernandez pointed out.

Regarding US President Bush"s declarations of vengeance,
Hernandez said that "it is a human way to respond to
aggression; it is human to say "let"s exterminate", but we
can"t allow ourselves to be stock with the logic of revenge,
we"re not going to solve anything that way."

Peruvian Minister of Interior, Fernando Rospigliosi,
considered that a large-scale bellicose response from
Washington could have prejudicial repercussions for poor
countries, like Peru.

He announced investigations into the possible presence of
terrorist groups from the Middle East in Peruvian territory,
and offered collaboration in the intelligence field to the US,
which US Ambassador George Hamilton accepted.
