That's why I've never gotten very far with SVN. Or many other "open-source" programs.
If you start looking at SVN, try looking at darcs instead. I've been pretty happy with it so far.
It's not a pure cvs evolution, but the changes have been small enough that its not too bad.
That fact that you need a Haskell compiler to compile from source is annoying. However, once it is compiled, it doesn't seem to need anywhere near the same number of dependencies as SVN:
