Oh no. It does not *have* to be excised. But if it is *required* to be
there by the license, it is GPL incompatible.

The requirement that the advertising be there is an extra requirement
upon the GPL, which is a violation of the GPL. Not the advertisement
itself, the requirement that it be there. Forced speech is not free
speech, type of scenario.



As an example, RieserFS is GPL'd code. It contains lots of
advertisements and props to sponsors. It is perfectly in the realm of
the GPL.

The GNU GPL does allow one type of forced speech: The copyright
blurbwhen the program is run interactively. If such a blurb is there,
you may not remove it. I'm not a big fan of that clause, personally.
