Umm..they are free to do so, just as you are free to setup a .stremler TLD if it floats your boat. All you need to do is convince enough ISPs to support your TLD and you're in business.
No large worldwide bureacracy needed.

And .com is a much-loved domain... why does this domain belong to the
US?  Surely all of our domains should be in .us, not .us, .com, .org,
.net, .edu, .gov, and .mil....

Because that's the way it was setup.
The same reason the international dialing code for the U.S. is +1.
Bitching about it now is crying over spilled milk.


I want a class C domain for home use. Why can't I have it? For cheap?
Contact whoever assigns IPs in your home country, follow their rules, and contract with an ISP to route it.
