The Technician Class has no code requirement.

But all Amateur license classes (Novice, Technician, General, Advanced, and Amateur Extra) have limitations, mainly dealing with frequency privileges and maximum transmit power.

I'm not sure if it's a done deal yet, but the code requirement was going to be removed from all licenses.

The reason I never got a license is because of the code requirement. I was never really interested in the limited Technician class license (and since I really had no plans to stay in radio, I had little incentive to get one).

FKI (for KPLUG's Information), we (QUAKE Global, Inc.) now have modems capable of fairly high wireless bandwidth. They use both satellite and cellular connections. Think of them like an external dial-up modem only with DSL speed. Drawback - they're not cheap (brand new product line means low quantity which translates to higher production cost).

We are also working on higher bandwidth, lower cost satellite modems (think Iridium). For someone willing to put in the development effort, these things have a great potential.
