I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but how do you know it isn't just your disk not reading the file fast enough? Have you tried copying something like /dev/zero which does not require disk access? Copy /dev/zero on one machine to /dev/null on another machine to take the disk out of the equation on both ends and see what happens.
