RTL8169 lets the CPU do most of the work. Guess how come they're so cheap. 
Those 18MB/s might be the max you get there.
(I haven't switched to GBE here yet, but installed some at a customer's site. 
rtl8169, too.)
From all I've heard the only cards worth recommending are intel and those with 
Marvell chips. Around 30 bucks but worth it.
