Does anyone think it would accomplish much to somehow vent the hot air
coming out of my computer to the outdoors instead of into my room? It
just struck me that it must be more efficient to vent the hot air
outdoors and cool the ambient air than to try to cool the hot air from
the computer. I am surprised more datacenters are not trying to do this.
And if it does make sense to do this (I strongly suspect that it does)
has anyone seen kits or cases for this? I think I might go down to the
hardware store tomorrow and buy some of that flexible plastic dryer vent
hose to attach to the computer and then hang out the window.
A friend of mine does that (more or less).
He's got ducting setup behind the computers that vents through the wall
into the attic.
In the attic, there is a solar power exhaust fan which vents to the outside.
He says it made a noticeable, but not huge difference in the electric
bill(mainly because the A/C ran less).
His rig is not pretty, but it does the job.
Another thing he used, but has since changed, was a portable A/C unit
vented the same way.
So rather than the computers vented to the attic, the A/C exhaust was.
He said it was quite efficient, but the A/C proved inadequate in overall
cooling(the computer room is on the top floor), so he switched to a wall
mounted unit.
This is in TN, where the summers can be pretty brutal as compared to
Southern California.
