Either of the ATIs are going to be a big pain, skip them. That

Really? Could you point me at the source code?
It's part of DRI which makes it part of X.org. Here's their wiki
page about the supported Intel chipsets:
http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Intel
The MacBook (and most other Intel Core-based laptops with integrated
graphics) uses the 945GM chipset (http://developer.intel.com/products/
chipsets/945gm/index.htm), which includes the GMA950 (http://
developer.intel.com/products/chipsets/gma950/index.htm) graphics
accelerator. Intel actually provides a "driver" tarball (http://
tinyurl.com/j22gz) but it's really just a snapshot of the appropriate
portions of the X.org source code tree.
A set of open source drivers for 3D would encourage me to go buy a
MacBook really quickly.
I would *happily* send a receipt photocopy and a note to nVidia and
ATI customer support saying "I bought this machine *specifically*
because it has open source graphics drivers. May Intel beat you
both."
Hehe well I'll be interested to see what you think of Intel's chip
and driver implementation, and then if all is well I'll definitely
share a chuckle with you when you send that note. :)
