We certainly have no proof that they weren't, either!  And in the
absence of absolute proof, I'm going to tend to believe our guys instead
of them.

Most, if not all, were captured in combat.  The Geneva Convention (to
which Al Quaeda is not a signatory) protects uniformed combatants
engaged in lawfully declared war.  Those creeps in Gitmo are lucky to
still be separating oxygen from the atmosphere... throughout the vast
majority of military history, illegal combatants were killed
out-of-hand.
