I would expect nothing less of you.
Now to the finish. I have solved the mystery without diminishing my
number of computer problems :-(
During the summer I had occasion to use the laptop away from home
without my usual firewall protections. Naturally I used lokkit to
magically enable nasty security.
Being a script (I think?), lokkit did obscure things but I'm going to
assume they had to do with changing the iptables. Of course, I forgot to
set it back.
Today I set it back and all is well ... with the laptop. It turns out
hendriena is throwing no route to host errors on everything. I had
assumed (gotcha again!) that it was part of the same problem.
But wait! hendriena is my wife's machine, and she's not having any
problems with outside access, so that's a _real_ low priority fix.
Think I'll go watch the Padres.
Thanks to all who contributed. I really did pay attention, even when
cussing you out. This is how I learn.

History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people
maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of
ignorance of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always
avail themselves for their own purposes.
