Hi,

The firewall is going to be built on top of the networking needs you
define. It's kind of odd to have a pre-definition of basic stuff, but
you'll want to enable traffic from your computers MAC/IP addressess, block
incomming requests from the internet (if your modem doesn't have that
capability already) and redirect any particular data packets from the
internet to a particular computer or zone, ie. you want to connect via ssh
from the internet to your home PC?, etc.

Regarding space, 1.4 Mb should suffice! :)
There are a wide range o distributions targetting the need of a firewall
system. From a floppy distro to a full install system, including some live
CDs that do not require installation on your hard drive.

Take a look to:

http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=firewalls
Or do a search on http://google.com/linux for firewall distros

interested in building a development station. This box would be connected
to the cable modem and the computers in the house would be connected to the
linux box by either a hub, switch or router (to be determined).

As absolutely little as you want to give it.
being a firewall isn't that CPU intensive (the SOHO boxes don't run on
desktop CPU's). Diskspace wise, I have done / partitions as small as 400MB.
