Hmm ... kind of fun.

But it also leads toward an intriguing idea.

Metric is good, but really should be based on division by

division by ten.

Sorry. I disagree. I much prefer working in units that map to my native number system, thank you very much. Think there might be a reason that metal shops use mils and fractions rather than fractions everywhere?

Division by 2 might be useful for partitioning, but not for scale changes. You normally have to go to at least a factor of 4 for a useful scale change.

A meter, a decimeter, a centimeter, and a millimeter are decent scale changes.

Similarly, the yard, foot(a little large at 1/3, though) and inch(which is a little small at 1/12 because of the foot being too large) are okay scale changes.

The foot is a little large, but surprisingly, it's closer to useful than a decimeter. Most things are in a single digit of feet, but are in a double digit of decimeters.

Personally, I would argue against 2 even for partitioning. It doesn't have enough extra factors. 10 isn't bad (you get 2 and 5). 12 would be better (2,3,4 and 6).
