Folks, you're all missing the point.

This is about *DRM*. It enables data to be encrypted from disk the whole way to the digital monitor with Microsoft being the arbiter of the keys.

Everybody *knows* that the average person can't manage the keys. They don't intend to let them. This is pure Microsoft, all the way.
