Intel's not purposely holding on to outdated architecture, they just don't have the replacement ready yet. The round of "Tukwila" Xeons, due in 2008, are supposed to come featuring CSI, Intel's answer to HyperTransport. It's all speculation now, but it's sounding like once again we'll be seeing the leapfrog effect - CSI is expected to outperform HyperTransport by a significant margin.
