k3b works nicely for doing that too.
k3b is just a GUI wrapper around growisofs. k3b doesn't deal with any of
the ISO creation or burning process itself. None of the other GUI
programs out there do their own stuff either.

90% of your gooey's are wrappers.  It's just nice to burn without having
to drop to the command line.

My point here was that if the command line growisofs doesn't work then neither will k3b or any other GUI DVD burning program.

The problem as stated is that he (Lan) can't find the DVD device. If it's not showing up in dmesg output then there is some other problem.
