Your point is well taken.

I never thought to check dmesg. Since the idea is to do a complete
reinstall anyway, I thought I wouldn't apply serious debugging power to
the issue until the damned thing refuses to work in the final
configuration.

Here's some fun: I brought in my laptop with the DVD iso to use the
"mindless" M$ utils at work. As a benchmark, the iso copied across my home
network (hardwire and no traffic) in less than 3 minutes with scp. I was
impressed.

Here at work it took 2 hrs 30 min. I am told we virus check everything on
the fly.

Then the first DVD was ruined by the burner. Apparently it's never worked.
I then took an external burner and made my MythDora (3.2) DVD using Nero.
I also made the CD boot image just in case I need to do a network install
(remember, I'm a CB, and not all my boxen can boot from every media). So
now I should be ready to do a FC5-based Myth install. I go into this
detail to drag the thread back to MythTV.

To all my Debian Gnu/friends, this is not a rejection of your favorite
Gnu/Distro. I just needed to work with something that wasn't Gnu to me.
