It appears that my CDRW/DVD-ROM drive on my laptop has gone south. It is in an endless seek mode and doesn't recognize any media at this point. So I'd like to ask... 1.) Does anyone know any CB diagnostics/fix-it tricks? 2.) Where would you go to get a laptop drive replaced, and if this is at all reasonable would it be reasonable to try to get a replacement drive that does CD-RW and DVD-RW? TIA, rbw
If it's anything like my Vaio (and I'm getting the impression most laptops are more similar than I thought) then it's just a standard half-height drive. You just have to find the screws to remove to pop it out. If that's the case then you should be able to get any standard replacement. When mine went screws I updated to DVD+RW and DL. I think it was around $90. I think you can get anything else for more like $40... Oh, one more piece to that. If you're concerned about aesthetics then you'll have to be more careful. The doors/covers aren't identical. I have a black door on the side of my blue laptop and a slight gap now. Doesn't bother me any though.
