Replace CDRW/DVD-ROM drive

It appears that my CDRW/DVD-ROM drive on my laptop has gone south. It is 
in an endless seek mode and doesn't recognize any media at this point. 
So I'd like to ask...
1.) Does anyone know any CB diagnostics/fix-it tricks?
2.) Where would you go to get a laptop drive replaced, and if this is at 
all reasonable would it be reasonable to try to get a replacement drive 
that does CD-RW and DVD-RW?
