It appears that my CDRW/DVD-ROM drive on my laptop has gone south. It is

So I'd like to ask...
1.) Does anyone know any CB diagnostics/fix-it tricks?

2.) Where would you go to get a laptop drive replaced, and if this is at
all reasonable would it be reasonable to try to get a replacement drive
that does CD-RW and DVD-RW?

If it's anything like my Vaio (and I'm getting the impression most laptops
are more similar than I thought) then it's just a standard half-height
drive. You just have to find the screws to remove to pop it out. [snip]

Do you pop the whole unit out, or the tray parts?
