These might be a convenient way to go.

I would not mind a little app that ran in the background and just
pushed all of my usr/pwd stuff off on to one of these together
with some info about the app that was asking for the usr/pwd.

I don't know exactly how to write that app right off but I suspect
that with a little thought it is not terribly difficult to do.

We're using it at work to manage password lists for all the systems
we maintain.  It stores the data in an encrypted form, and uses a
master password to unlock the file.

You can have the file on a USB key along with copies of the Linux and
Windows versions of the application, to make it portable.

It's a little slow, but I think the whole thing is written in tcl.
