"One Nation Under God" didn't appear on currency until 1864. It was not part of the pledge of allegiance until June 14, 1954. But you're right. Opponents are incorrect to argue based on history. They should be pointing out that government has no business suggesting that we (as a "nation") all believe in God, when secularism and plurality have been such an essential part of our success as a nation.
And, Washington in his Farewell Address said: "Of all the habits and dispositions which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports."
