I'd wouldn't be so quick to dismiss George Washington's remarks.  Remember
he said this in his Farewell Address.  That means he had already been
president for 8 years not to mention having led men in war as a general. 
I'd guess that he probably had a little more experience than us to comment
on what is important in politics.
