I don't think they were. I think it was because the general populous was
Christian (or thought they were) or otherwise believed in God. Also, the
country being founded upon Christian principals, it stood to reason that
these things would be implemented. I don't know this for sure though (as
I've never really researched it).

It's only been in recent years that anyone has really been moaning about
it.
