Don't even get me started on the idiocy of such things. *ugh*

The idiocy of using one or the idiocy of using a poorly written one?

Both. First, email is a stateless communication method. If you need to reach me immediately, pick up the phone. If not, then your email can wait until I'm back from doing X. Second, if I'm not responding to your email in a "timely" fashion, look at my calendar and see what I'm doing if you care that much. My voicemail will likely tell you that I won't be around, as well.

Using a poorly-written autoresponder is just asking for trouble all around (and I'm sure I don't need to preach to you the evils of doing so)!

Vacation programs are one of those things that people constantly reinvent poorly.

... and really, are almost wholly unnecessary. Back in the old centrallized UNIX days when /usr/bin/vacation was hip, I could have any vacation or scheduling announcements in my .plan or .project files. If I'm not answering my emails, finger me. You'll get my .project and my .plan, which will have that information.

Windows people can use their (ugh) outlook calendars. UNIX people can now use some other sort of calendaring system or (god forbid) google calendar.

I don't know, I just don't see the need.
