[ 45.480444] NFORCE3-250: neither IDE port enabled (BIOS)
Check your BIOS settings and see if the IDE ports are disabled
altogether. That will definitely cause problems
nothing I can do about it, no such BIOS option.
I find that really hard to believe. I can't remember the last time I saw
a modern (i.e. <3 yrs. old) mobo that didn't have such an option.
o Sometimes it's listed under "Peripherals".
o Make sure you go through each menu entry.
o Make sure you scroll down on all BIOS Setup pages. It's not always
obvious this is possible, but is often the case.
Okay, I'm looking at the manual now.
There is such a setting: "Advanced" | "Onboard Devices".
Make sure you are using the proper cables. For PATA, you should be using
an 80-pin ribbon cable, preferably, the one that came with the mobo. Pay
attention to which end is which, they are not interchangeable.
If you're not using the SATA-RAID, I'd disable it, just to eliminate
variables.
I would set all IDE modes to "Auto" to start (TYPE, LBA, BLOCK, PIO,
DMA, an S.M.A.R.T).
Enable "32Bit Data Transfer".
