I believe it has been since FreeBSD 5+ and UFS2 (circa 2003).
OK, so FreeBSD has a new file system. I wasn't aware of USF2 because
all the FreeBSD I run is archaic, I guess. ;-)
Well, you are still on 4.X, right? ;)
The reason why UFS had to get upgraded was the limitation to 32-bit
pointers.
One of the things I like about FreeBSD is that it doesn't tend to
gratuitously change things. However, 32-bit limits on size and offset
was simply not going to be viable.
